Ingredients Required

You will need the following ingredients to make the best Black Forest Cake: 150g dark chocolate, 225g butter, 225g caster sugar, 4 eggs, 150g plain flour, 2 tsp baking powder, 2 tbsp cocoa powder, some cherries and a can of cherry compote.

Creating the Batter

To make the batter, start by melting the chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water. Once melted, remove from the heat and leave to cool for a few minutes. In a separate bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then fold in the melted chocolate. Sift in the flour, baking powder and cocoa powder, and stir until well combined.

Baking the Cake

Grease and line two 8 inch round cake tins. Divide the batter between the two tins and bake in the oven at 180C for 25-30 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tins for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Assembling the Cake

Once the cake has cooled, place one of the sponges onto a cake stand. Spread over a layer of cherry compote, then arrange some cherries on top. Place the other sponge on top, then spread the remaining cherry compote over the top. Decorate with some more cherries and some grated chocolate, if desired.
